The Dolomites, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are undoubtedly among the most beautiful mountains in the world, and those of the Val di Fassa represent a unique and spectacular scenery. The most famous mountain groups, such as Catinaccio, Marmolada, Sella-Pordoi and Sassolungo, surround the valley, offering breathtaking views. Since 2010, UNESCO has recognised the Val di Fassa Dolomites as a World Heritage Site.
On the territory of San Giovanni di Fassa is the entrance to the picturesque Val San Nicolò, a valley nestled between the volcanic rocks of Buffaure and the crystalline rocks of Costabella. Val San Nicolò is particularly popular for its scenic beauty and easy access, by shuttle bus or on foot, thanks to the gentle slopes that make it ideal for walking. The valley offers a wide variety of hiking trails for all levels, from easy trails such as the Pas de San Nicolò and Lagusel, to more challenging routes such as Col Ombert and the Cresta di Costabella, with spectacular views along the way.
In winter, the Val di San Nicolò can only be reached on foot, as the asphalted road is occupied by the ski slope coming down from Buffaure. Even under the snow, the landscape offers an unforgettable spectacle.
